PIXAR v/s Disney

While reading through message board on IMDb, I found the analysis of PIXAR-Disney split. It was well-written. I couldn't have agreed more, so I thought to post it on my blog.

==

I think it has to do with creative differences. Pixar wants to make unique stand alone films, while Disney wants to milk as much money as possible. An example of this is Toy Story 2, which was in fact very good. However, its my understanding that Pixar never wanted to make any sequels, but as Disney is the distributor they own the rights to the characters.

The reason why this is bad is soon Disney will turn Pixar into itself. Like you go to the grocery store and see "Peter Pan 2", "102 Dalmations", "Lion King 2", "Little Mermaid 2", "Aladdin 2". I've never watched these, but you can tell just by looking at the quality of the drawings showing scenes from the films that this is just Saturday morning quality animation. Its just "Hey, we have this brand called Peter Pan, lets squeeze a little more profit out of it."

The problem with this is Disney has diluted its brand image. Right now people know any time they see a Pixar logo that the film will be great. Why? Because they have slowly built up a reputation. As such they don't need the big named stars necessarily to get an audience in. Their name is the star attracting power. Disney used to have this.

To me this is a key problem with much of Hollywood. If they built their companies as quality brands they wouldn't have to hire hugely expensive actors. Its like this. Harrison Ford is paid $20 million per film because he has built up the Harrison Ford brand. Everytime the audience sees his name we know based on his track record that it will be of X quality. So he attracts the audience. A production company could do this as well if they consistently created the highest quality films. Then they could hire actors at regular salaries, but since their brand is so strong, people would still come. It would take years of consistent quality filmmaking (and probably losing money along the way) before this brand could be established, but it would be worth it in the long run.

This is probably not the only issue Pixar has with Disney, but I think it is one of them. Uncertainty is a big thing for movie goers. We need a reason to know that my $10 + (if you are a parent) babysitting money, and popcorn etc... will be worth it. A strong brand gives you this certainty. If Pixar became known for crap, even if it was just a few times, they would dilute that certainty the public has built into them.

That's called Indianization

It's widespread that The Incredibles was a huge hit in US. It was bound to happen... I repeat again, PIXAR RULES :-) After its successful run in US, The Incredibles is ready to hit India with bang... Hindi version of the movie named Hum hain Lajawaab, stars Shahrukh Khan, his son and Javed Jaffari. According to me the only reason to choose SRK for voicing is to make this movie more popular. Disney knows how to earn profit (Refer to my previous article subjected "Toy story will be spoiled" ). Anyways.. some interesting facts about Hum Hain Lajawaab

Here are the name of characters :
Bob Parr - Baldeo Parr (SRK)
Frozone - Barfila
'Dash' - Tez(Apparently so, because Dash is very fast!!!)
Mirage - Mona(couldn't have been better name for this character :-) )

Rediff mentions "Jaaved has also written the Hindi script". My God... what would happen to the dialgoues...??? Does anyone recall "Stuart Little" in hindi?? "Rajma kha ke hazma kharab ho gaya", "Kabhi khushi kabhi gam, kabhi zyada kabhi kam". Although it spoiled fun of the original dialogues for some people, but I feel it was well suited for Indian audience. Personally speaking, I had enjoyed movie at that point of time. Shahrukh Khan was quoted saying "Unfortunately, I must admit, for all of us sitting here, the English version still sounds better", but this modified version is better suited for Indian audience who may be unaware of many references in US context.

Here is rediff coverage of promotional event of the movie

Toy Story will be spoiled...

It's official now. In greed of money, Disney has decided to go for "Toy Story 3" (courtesy:- Rediff) and I tell you this movie is going to SUCK!!!

It's widely known fact that Pixar is splitting with disney. "The Incredibles" is the second last movie of Pixar with Disney with Cars(2005) being last. Here is the long story short.

Pixar Animation Studio, when started was a very small affair. Encouraged by Steve Jobs, Pixar eventually became bigger and bigger with their wonderful animations and fabulous movies. Now Pixar is animation studios, so it doesn't do the job of distributing the movies, so they had done contract with disney and disney would market and distribute the movies. With only distributing stuff, Disney was eating up most of the part from profits (75% as far as I remember). Obviously Pixar deserved much more than this, but negotiations didn't go well and finally they decided to split. NOW, the thing is, as great movies of Pixar like, Toy Story 1 & 2, Monsters Inc. , Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, a Bug's life are made under Disney banner, Disney has right over the movies and characters of the movies, so they are planning sequel of Toy Story. With background of Pixar Both Toy Story movies were simply superb, BUT NOW, I wonder from where would disney get such wonderful animation studios to fulfill the expectations and it will not be par with first two parts, IMHO

Disney Sucks...
Pixar Rocks...

PIXAR doesn't disappoint...!!!

The Incredibles opens with 70M$ on opening weekend. In past works, PIXAR has not disappointed viewers, All past 6 movies of PIXAR has proved great at boxoffice, so obviously expectations were high. The reviews till now has been very favourable. People and critics are praising this movie like anything. Predictions say that its gross will be more than that of Finding Nemo (339 M$), but may not cross Shrek2 (436 M$), which is highest for any animated movie, although Finding Nemo rules when International earnings are considered. Statistics aside, Another interesting aspect is that Disney has decided to dub this movie in Hindi for Indian release and it will be released on 17th December (along with Swades) and dubbing artists for the movie are Shahrukh Khan, his son Aryan and Javed Jaffery. Of course, Disney is targetting larger audience.

At IMDb, around 2000 votes till now has earned respectable weighted average of 8.6 for the movie. In the case of 250, its current rank is 205 and rating of 7.8(!!!!!), but I personally think that movie will end up in top 100 as the time passes. Let's see, what the future has in for it. I am dying to watch the movie, I am definitely going to see this in the hall as soon as it releases over here. I may have to hold my temptation if DVDrip comes to LAN sooner than that ;-)

Shark Tale finds no takers...

In the era of advance technologies, animated movies with wonderful FX and screenplay are proving bigger and bigger hits at the boxoffice. First half of 2004... Shrek 2 proves the highest earning animated movie and 3rd best earning movie after Titanic and Starwars (courtesy : IMDb). Next work of dreamworks, SHARK TALE. people were expecting more from this movie, but movie had only big names like Robert deNiro, Will Smith, Renee Zellwegger, Angelina Jolie, but lack of good story proved disaster for the movie and it proved a flop. Although it earned double (150M$) as compared to the cost of the movie (around 75M$), but it disappointed the viewers. Now all eyes are set to the next PIXAR release, The Incredibles, releasing on November 5, 2004. Out of 6 movies till now, PIXAR hasn't delievered a single flop. let's see what PIXAR has in bag for us... Let's wait-and-watch...

In just 4 weeks of release Shrek2 has collected above 350 M$, which is 9th in all-time US box-office and already entered into the Top-10 of highest earning movies and has become highest earning Animated Movie (earlier one was "Finding Nemo" at #10 with 339 M$)

Yahoo's Latest Ranking

Shrek has surpassed Shrek2 , so hopes will be same for SpiderMan2 whose prequel collected above 400 M$. But for me, I am eagerly waiting for sequel of "Finding Nemo" that must be something...!!! I had liked the first part too much....

Shark Tale

SharkTale

Yet another animated movie to make a breakthrough... probably..!!! with great stars such as Robert De Niro, Renee Zellweger, Angelina Jolie, Will Smith.. movie probably will add history after record breaking collection of Finding Nemo and fantastic start by Shrek 2... Animated movies are making their way through hollywood. Initially, animated movies were considered for children only, but the quality they provide these days with Great Animation, Great Storyline etc. they are also being popular among all ages. Hope this movie will continue this thing...
